Aerodynamics of Low Reynolds Number Plunging Airfoil under Gusty Environment

چکیده
Abstract It is known that plunging airfoil can produce both lift and thrust with certain combination of plunging amplitude and frequency. Motivated by our interest in micro air vehicles (MAVs), we utilize a NavierStokes equation solver to investigate the aerodynamics of a flapping airfoil. The roles of the plunging and pitching amplitude and frequency, and Strouhal number are studied. For a symmetric plunging airfoil NACA0012 at zero geometric angle of attack and chord Reynolds number of 2×10, at the same plunging frequency, it can produce either drag or thrust depending on the plunging amplitude. At the considered plunging amplitude (from 0.0125c to 0.075c), the flow history has more influence than the kinematic angle of attack to determine the lift. When drag is produced, the viscous force dominates the total drag with decreasing influence as the plunging amplitude increases. For an airfoil experiencing combined plunge and pitch motion, both thrust and input power increase with the Strouhal number (within the range of 0.03 to 0.5). For the case studied, the thrust is induced by the lift, which approximately follows the curve of the kinematic angle of attack. Leading edge vortex moves downstream and interacts with the trailing edge vortex. We also study the impact of gust on stationary airfoil and flapping airfoil. Within the range of the parameters tested, for stationary airfoil the lift is in phase with the velocity but the drag is slightly out of phase. For flapping airfoil, neither lift nor drag is in phase with the velocity.

In this paper we carry out computational studies of three-dimensional flow over flapping wings. The problems we have investigated include, firstly, three-dimensonal simulation of flow over an extruded SD7003 airfoil in plunging motion at transitional Reynolds number and, secondly, flow over a pair of flapping rectangle wings with constant NACA0012 cross-sectional airfoil profile at low Reynolds...
متن کاملVortex Mode Bifurcation and Lift Force of a Plunging Airfoil at Low Reynolds Numbers
Force and supporting particle image velocimetry measurements were performed on a plunging NACA 0012 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 10,000, at pre-stall, stall, and post-stall angles of attack. The lift coefficient for pre-stall and stall angles of attack at larger amplitudes showed abrupt bifurcations with the branch determined by initial conditions. With the frequency gradually increasing, ve...

Plunging airfoils are investigated for applications such as Micro-Air Vehicles (MAVs) and bird and fish like propulsion. Plunging or flapping wings can provide more propulsive efficiency than that of fixed wings, especially at small to moderate Reynolds numbers, where the MAVs (due to their small size) operate. Furthermore, it has been observed that birds and insects rely on detaching and separ...

Direct numerical simulations were performed to study the effect of an elastically mounted trailing edge actuator on the unsteady flow over a plunging, thin airfoil at Reynolds number of 14700 based on the chord length. The goal is to investigate potential benefits of flow-induced passive actuation of the trailing edge to the lift and drag characteristics of flapping MAV wings. The trailing edge...
